Fitted Dress Shirts – Do You Need an Undershirt?

One question you may have when putting together your workplace wardrobe is whether to incorporate undershirts in your daily outfits. Many men wear either white undershirts or wifebeaters under their regular dress shirts, but when wearing a fitted dress shirt, it seems like it would be even less appropriate due to potential bulkiness.

The major reasons people wear undershirts under a dress shirt are either to use it serve as a sweat guard to prevent getting sweat stains all over the shirt, to extend the life of the dress shirt by not having to get it dry cleaned after each wearing, or because some people just feel “naked” without another layer below the dress shirt. The sweat catcher argument seems a little counterintuitive because personally when I have an extra layer on I feel hotter and sweat more than I would to begin with.

The major negative of wearing an undershirt is when people can notice that you are wearing one! It definitely looks tacky when you can see the outline of an undershirt under a fitted dress shirt. Your goal should be to find a thin undershirt, one that doesn’t have bulky cloth at the end of the sleeves and collar, and try to find one that will match the color of your fitted dress shirt if possible.

Since fitted dress shirts leave you with less room for that second layer, you seriously want to try to find as thin of an undershirt as possible. If you tend to wear your fitted dress shirt with your top button unbuttoned, try to look for an undershirt with a v-neck collar. Lastly, you also want to make sure your undershirt is long enough to stay tucked into your pants because it will certainly look disheveled if the undershirt is constantly becoming untucked.
